Find Answers for Questions You Have.
Planning your Sri Lankan adventure? We've compiled answers to the most common questions from our international travelers to help you prepare for an unforgettable journey.
We're here to help you!
Most visitors to Sri Lanka require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or visa. Citizens from many countries including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and most European countries can obtain an ETA online before arrival. The ETA is typically valid for 30 days and can be extended. Indian and Chinese citizens may have different requirements. We recommend checking the latest visa requirements for your nationality at least 2-3 weeks before your travel date. We can assist you with visa application guidance as part of our travel planning services.
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, making it a year-round destination. The west and south coasts (including Colombo, Galle, and Mirissa) are best from December to April. The east coast and hill country (including Kandy and Ella) are ideal from May to September. The central highlands enjoy pleasant weather year-round, though it can be cooler. Generally, December to March is considered peak season with excellent weather across most regions. We'll help you plan your itinerary based on your preferred travel dates and the regions you want to explore.
The currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments in tourist areas. ATMs are readily available in cities and tourist destinations. We recommend carrying some cash for smaller establishments, local markets, and tips. Currency exchange services are available at the airport and in major cities. It's advisable to inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid card issues. US Dollars are sometimes accepted in tourist areas, but local currency is preferred.
Sri Lanka is generally a safe destination for travelers. The country is known for its warm hospitality and friendly locals. However, as with any travel destination, it's important to take standard precautions: keep valuables secure, be cautious in crowded areas, avoid isolated areas after dark, and follow local advice. We provide 24/7 support during your trip and can assist with any concerns. We also recommend registering with your embassy upon arrival and keeping emergency contact numbers handy. Our team stays updated on local conditions and will advise you accordingly.
While no specific vaccinations are mandatory for entry, we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider about routine vaccinations and considering Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Malaria is not a concern in most tourist areas, but dengue fever can occur, so mosquito repellent is advisable. It's recommended to drink bottled water and be cautious with street food initially. We can provide detailed health and safety guidelines tailored to your itinerary, including recommendations for travel insurance which we strongly advise for all international travelers.
We arrange private vehicles with experienced drivers for most of our tours, which offers the most comfortable and flexible way to travel. The famous train journey from Kandy to Ella is a must-experience and we can include this in your itinerary. Domestic flights are available for longer distances. Tuk-tuks are great for short local trips. We handle all transportation arrangements as part of your package, ensuring reliable vehicles, English-speaking drivers, and seamless transfers between destinations. All our vehicles are well-maintained and insured.
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing for the coastal areas and warmer layers for the hill country (especially Kandy and Ella, where evenings can be cool). Comfortable walking shoes are essential for temple visits and hiking. Modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) is required for temple visits. Don't forget sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and sunglasses. A light rain jacket is useful year-round. If visiting Yala National Park, neutral-colored clothing is recommended. We provide a detailed packing list based on your specific itinerary and travel dates.
